Things to do in Gainesville
Gainesville is a college town so there are many things to do associated with the university. It doesn’t take long to leave the city behind and see some of central Florida’s beautiful scenery.
Around Gainesville
University of Florida has a lovely campus with multiple museums. The “bat house” at sundown is a very cool and unique experience. The football stadium (“The Swamp”) is usually open to the public during normal business hours.
Hawthorne Trail: This trail stretches 16 miles from the city of Gainesville's Boulware Springs Park through the Paynes Prairie Preserve State Park and other local and state conservation lands.
Outside of Gainesville
Ichetucknee Springs State Park: A favorite of ours! Tubing, wildlife, camping, and swimming are just a few of the many things that make this State Park so special, and it is the perfect spot to spend the day.
Gilchrist Blue Springs State Park: About 30 minutes outside Gainesville, this park contains a collection of natural springs and is about about a quarter mile to the Santa Fe River.
Saint Augustine: About an hour and a half east, it is the oldest continuously inhabited European-established settlement in the U.S. It’s a unique place with its rich Spanish colonial history, architecture, and cobblestone streets. The Castillo de San Marcos is the oldest masonry fortification in the continental United States.
